In the tutorial the only names given to expressions are their GRAIL names, otherwise known as knowledge names. Every knowledge name must identify exactly one category or attribute. No synonyms are allowed, and the names must conform to GRAIL syntax - they must contain no spaces and begin with a letter.

One of the main functions of GALEN is to build terminologies with convenient, user friendly names. In fact, a major function is to build multilingual terminologies in which any term can have names in each language.

The GALEN terminology servers contain special modules for generating natural looking text from GRAIL expressions and for annotating GRAIL categories and attributes to provide multilingual lexicons. This is beyond the scope of this tutorial.
